Following the pandemic, many people are turning to new careers to boost their income and get more job satisfaction. While this may be risky, some are finding they are thriving in their new professions and making six-figure salaries. One woman in her 60s spoke to Express.co.uk, sharing her story of leaving her NHS job behind and becoming “mortgage free” after taking on a new role.

Jill McGowan, 68, is a former NHS Senior Nurse Manager and lecturer from Bothwell, Glasgow.

Looking for better ways to improve people’s dysfunctional breathing outside of the health service, Ms McGowan opted to start her business.

In order to accomplish this, she turned to The Coaching Masters, an online life coaching academy, for guidance on taking those crucial next steps in her career goals.

The result has been her getting a six-figure salary, purchasing a £350,000 home and becoming mortgage free.

Ms McGowan explained: “I had a long career in nursing in the NHS and also did a PHD.

“When I did my PHD, I sold my property to help fund my research. This really pushed me financially and, at one point, I came close to bankruptcy.

“I went on to purchase a flat on an interest-free mortgage, so the monthly payments were low but I wasn’t making a dent in the amount I owed.

“Although I worked my way up and was in quite a senior position towards the end of my nursing career earning between £45,000-50,000, it was my previous financial issues that helped shape my ambition of being mortgage free; to me, that is financial freedom and provides stability that I never used to have.”

Born out of her PhD, which looked into how to achieve ultimate health and psychological wellbeing by reversing dysfunctional breathing, Ms McGowan’s new business has taken her from near bankruptcy to a six-figure salary.

On this journey, she said: “Three years ago, I decided to start my business. I wanted to move away from traditional, medicine-based health and look into alternative options.

“Over the years, I have done more and more studying into how other approaches to health are just as effective, if not more, than just simply pumping medication into people.

“The Ideal Breath Coach was born. I work with people who are looking to improve their health; whether that’s physical or psychological.

“I usually work with people between six to 12 weeks, teaching them different breathwork strategies, treatment plans and new ways of tackling their health issues.”

Specifically, she praised the work done by The Coaching Masters in helping her reach her career dreams, an online life coaching academy and training platform for aspiring coaches founded by Lewis Raymond Taylor.

The health expert added: “Through The Coaching Masters I have learned so much about personal development and business growth.

“The business strategy was broken down week by week, meaning I could focus on each different element at a time. I felt like I not only shaped my business on the course, but I also found myself.

“I have now done numerous courses with The Coaching Masters including Coaching, NLP Masters, Holistic Modalities and Advanced Holistic Modalities.

“My investment has more than paid off and the impact it has had on my life is phenomenal.

“When I started my business, my goal was to be in a position to buy a house in the area I am now and be mortgage-free.

“To be able to say I’ve done that in two and a half years, is incredible.”
