SEISS, or the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme as it is formally known, is designed to help self-employed people whose income has been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Support has been issued by the Chancellor Rishi Sunak and HMRC in the form of grants to help the self-employed. Eligible individuals have been able to claim at regular intervals, with the scheme extended to provide further support as the pandemic has dragged on.

Recently, the fourth grant has opened to allow self-employed people to make claims which cover February to April.

However, while fourth grant support is likely to be welcome, Britons are urged to bear a key deadline in mind.

Those who are eligible will only have until June 1, 2021 to apply for formal support.

Thankfully, though, HMRC is contacting self-employed individuals to let them know about the grant.

Britons can expect to be given a date that it will be best for them to make an SEISS claim on.

However, they should try to bear this in mind as much as possible to avoid missing the deadline to get support.

Individuals who have not received a personal claim date by email or letter from HMRC can usually make a claim.

But if people are concerned as to why they haven’t received a date, then they may wish to reach out to the Revenue to find out more.

Those who are unable to claim online should also contact HMRC, using the dedicated SEISS helpline for further guidance.

To make a claim, individuals will need certain information to hand to help.

This includes:

  • Self Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference
  • National Insurance number
  • Government Gateway user ID and password
  • UK bank details including account number, sort code, name on the account and address linked to the account 

Bank account details should only be provided where a BACS payment can be accepted.

HMRC has confirmed individuals may also need to answer other questions relating to their personal circumstances when applying for fourth grant support.

This could include passport, driving licence or credit file information. 

A claim must be made by the person in question, as asking a tax agent, adviser or someone else to claim on a person’s behalf is likely to trigger a fraud alert.

This is part of HMRC’s system to ensure the payments of SEISS are issued to the right people, and a fraud alert will delay an individual’s payment. 

Finally, it is worth bearing in mind the potential tax implications of claiming support through SEISS.

The grant, HMRC has confirmed its subject to Income Tax and self-employed National Insurance contributions.

Britons will also need to report this on their 2021 to 2022 Self Assessment tax return.

The grant will count towards a person’s annual allowance for pension contributions, too, which is especially important for those considering retirement.
