PIP is a state benefit designed to help with some of the extra costs associated with long term ill-health or disability. So long as a claimant is eligible, they’ll get between £23.60 and £151.40 a week.
While they’re claiming, they’ll be required to inform the Government of any changes in their circumstances that could affect payments.
Some changes may reduce payments or halt them altogether.
Should a claimant give wrong information or withhold details of their changes, they could be taken to court or be issued with a penalty.
To report a change, claimants will need to contact the PIP enquiry line for assistance.
The PIP enquiry line must be contacted if:
- A claimant’s personal details change, for example, address or doctor changes
- The help they need for their condition changes
- Their condition has worsened and they’re not expected to live more than six months
- They go into hospital or a care home
- They go abroad
- They’re imprisoned or held in detention

Initial claims for PIP can be made by calling the DWP.
Additionally, it is also possible to claim by post.
Claimants will likely face an initial assessment by an independent healthcare professional to determine how much should be paid out.
Should a claimant disagree with a PIP decision, they’ll be able to challenge it under mandatory reconsideration rules.
When claiming, applicants will need to have the following information ready:
- Their contact details, for example telephone number
- Their date of birth
- Their National Insurance number
- Their bank or building society account number and sort code
- Their doctor or health worker’s name, address and telephone number
- Dates and addresses for any time spent abroad, in a care home or hospital
PIP payments will usually come through every four weeks and claimants will receive a decision letter providing them with more information on this.
Should a payment date fall on a bank holiday, claimants will usually be paid on the first working day before this.
All benefits, pensions and allowances will be paid into a designated bank, building society or credit union account.
