The festive season tends to be awash with bright lights, outlandish colours and garish decorations. However, if you’re looking to sell your home, you might want to put the Christmas decorating on hold.
Experts at GetAgent have shared their tips on how to decorate your home with festive colour while still appearing to potential buyers.
White lights only
Bright coloured, flashing lights can really put people off looking at a property.
Avoid lights like this in your tree or in any area around it.
Instead, go for white lights that create a more natural look.
No exterior decorations
Avoid large inflatables, bright lights or reindeer on your roof.
If you do want to add some exterior decorations, opt for white lights, or a welcoming wreath of holly and ivy on your door.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of Christmas is the scent of spices like cinnamon and mulled wine.
Festive candles, oil burners and essential oils in diffusers can make your home smell welcoming and inviting.
A real tree can also add a lovely pine scent to your home.
Don’t cover up your home’s best features
If you have original coving or an impressive bay window, be sure not to cover either of them with Christmas decorations.
A Christmas tree in a bay window might look good at this time of year but it can make a room look smaller.

Light is everything
Natural light is essential for viewings so make sure you don’t block natural light with decorations.
Unfortunately, your neighbour’s decorations can put buyers off.
Bright, garish decorations outside your neighbours’ home could put some buyers off.
If you have a good relationship with your neighbours, let them know you are trying to sell over the festive period and to be mindful of potential buyers.

Founder and CEO of GetAgent.co.uk Colby Short said selling your home over Christmas can be “difficult” as the market quietens down.
However, he said the festive period doesn’t stop people needing to sell their homes.
He continued: “You can use the season to your advantage by using simple and stylish decorations to accentuate your properties interior. Use smells such as mulled wine or a burning log fire cinnamon or orange which create a homey and festive atmosphere.
“Lighting a fire can also be a great way to invite viewers in on a cold winter’s night, and showing them what a cosy night in could look like.
“Be sure to have photos taken without Christmas decorations, as you don’t want to date your property. Decorations can also skewer how big your property is.
“If you are lucky to have high ceilings however, a tree is a great way to show off the space.
“Some may want to postpone any viewings or meetings until after the season, especially if you are the type to go all out with the decorations, that way you can enjoy Christmas without the worry of potentially deterring buyers.
“If you know you will have extra noise and traffic from people driving by neighbours and any light displays too.
“The reality is that potential buyers want to see how their potential house would look for the remaining 50 weeks of the year, but it doesn’t mean you can’t decorate!
“In fact, if you do it right, Christmas can be the perfect time to showcase warmth, character and charm of your property to prospective buyers.”
