Ten years ago, I was a Pilates instructor in New York City teaching small group classes and private sessions. I certainly didn't consider myself an entrepreneur, however, I loved helping my clients and wanted to have a greater impact and reach more people.
So, from my small apartment with two fractured ribs from a recent surfing accident, I balanced my flip video camera (remember those?) on a stack of books and shot my very first YouTube video.
The video was dark, the sound echoed, it was imperfect — but I knew I had to take action. With my nerves fluttering, I pressed publish.
Today, I've garnered over 23 million views across all my YouTube videos and built a community of over 173,000 subscribers from all over the world. My most popular video, an arm workout, has over four million views and is where a majority of my students, coaching clients, and members of my fitness community, Total Body Transformation, discovered me. It's easily contributed to over seven figures in my business.
In my experience, YouTube can be a great way to reach your ideal clients and customers. But when it comes to creating videos, many entrepreneurs feel overwhelmed and struggle with effectively utilizing it.
Here are some of my best strategies to quickly and easily leverage the platform for your business.
Show up as you are
We're all craving more connection and authenticity now more than ever, so let go of the idea of being perfect and give yourself permission to show up and create with "warts and all."
Early on on my channel when I would flub a word, do something goofy, or even make a little mistake, that was what made it real and relatable — and to my surprise, was what my audience resonated with the most.
For example, when demonstrating exercises, there have been many times when I've lost my balance during a challenging move, and rather than editing it out, I keep those little mistakes in the videos. My audience always says, "You're so real! It's like working out with a friend."
These imperfections allow them to see that I'm far from perfect and it gives them permission to not be perfect either.
No matter what your business or niche is, the more you embrace you and what makes you and your business unique, the more your audience will keep coming back for more.
Use the community tab regularly
Once you have 1,000 subscribers, you'll have access to the community tab on YouTube.
Think of this as a blog that YouTube created for you. You can poll your audience, get direct feedback, leave inspirational messages, post photos, link to your products and services, and more, and it will show up right in your audience's feed as they're scrolling for a video to watch.
This is a quick and massively effective way to get in front of your audience without having to create more videos.
For example, on my channel, I post one new video each week, however, I post quotes, inspiring messages, and behind-the-scenes images of my life on the community tab five days a week. The quotes always perform really well, but any time I show my daughter I get the most engagement. I believe this is because my community has grown with me over the years, and they love seeing me in this new role as a mother, in addition to being an entrepreneur and coach.
And remember, the more you engage with your audience, the more the algorithm sees that you're creating highly engaged content and the more views and subscribers you'll receive.
Respond to comments with clarifying and specific questions
Every single channel and video started with zero views and subscribers. However, you can grow quicker and faster when you actively engage with the community that you're building.
Use the comments section to ask questions of your viewers. When someone leaves a nice but vague comment saying "loved this video," instead of leaving a generic "thanks" in response, use this as an opportunity to ask them a clarifying question, such as, "What resonated with you the most?"
As with all marketing efforts, we want to quickly and easily get our viewers to know, like, and trust us, and just like in a real relationship, that requires attention and engagement.
