THE first driving lesson is a long-awaited moment for many.
Being prepared for the first lesson, ironing out any questions and knowing the logistics of the day will help to ease these nerves.
Here Seb Goldin, CEO of RED Driving School has given some top tips to help you settle in…
Liaise with your Driving Instructor on the exact timings and location for the lesson.
Confirm timings with your instructor the day before your lesson to ensure you know where you are meant to be and when.
This seems simple but will allow you to be at the required location in advance, removing any feelings of being rushed or confused before you have even begun.

Prepare your documents
At the start of your first driving lesson, you will be required to show your provisional driving license to your driving instructor.
Have this to hand – without it, you’ll not be able to begin driving.
Consider your previous experience and your goals
Be prepared to tell your instructor about any previous driving experience and have a view on your timings for test success.
Your driving instructor will update you throughout the course of your lessons on your progress so you will always know how you’re working against your target for test success.
Plan your outfit
Whilst it may seem like a random tip, sensible shoes and comfortable clothing will work in your favour and set you up for better driving.
Remember that you will be sitting down for up to two hours at a time, so it’s important to dress accordingly.
Government advice on driving lessons remains to have the car well ventilated to reduce any Covid risks so take the temperature of the car into consideration when choosing your clothing.
Make sure you are hydrated and choose brain foods
Hydration is important for focus, so make sure that in the hours before your first lesson you are drinking sufficient amounts of water.
However, there is a balance to be had, as you won’t want to put yourself in a position that you’ll be desperate for the toilet.
Although it can be tempting, it is wise to avoid too much caffeine.
In terms of food, we recommend slow energy release foods such as porridge, banana or cereal bars which can stimulate you throughout your lesson.
Go to bed early
Whilst it can be tempting to stay up late, especially when excited about something such as
your first driving lesson, sleep is an essential function.
It allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up.
It is wise to get a good night’s sleep prior to your first driving lesson to help with your ability to concentrate.
Prepare, prepare, prepare
Being able to drive is a superb skillset which enables freedom and independence. While the learning process requires focus and responsibility, it should be enjoyed.
Being as prepared as possible for every lesson, taking your driving instructor’s advice on and practicing outside of lessons if you are in a position to do so will stand you in the best possible position for success.
