Fears of iPhone 14 delay as Apple insiders warn China lockdowns could ruin release date

AN UPCOMING iPhone model could be delayed by weeks after launch.

The release of one of the four iPhone 14 models expected later this year is reportedly at risk.

Apple unleashes a host of new iPhone models every September.

And this year is no different: we're expecting the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple will likely announce them all in early September, followed by a release around 10 days later.

But a new report from Nikkei Asia warns that "at least one" of these models is behind schedule.

The delay is linked to disruptions due to Covid lockdowns in China, according to industry insiders.

And this could mean you're waiting longer than you'd like for a new iPhone.

"It is challenging to make up for the lost time," a supplier told Nikkei.

"Apple and its suppliers are working around the clock to speed up development."

But they added that the re-opening is "rather slow".

Apple itself has warned that China lockdowns are disrupting production.

And models in recent years have been delayed at launch: the iPhone 12 Pro Max shipped three weeks after the iPhone 12 Pro.

It's still not clear which specific iPhone model might be delayed.

And it's possible that Apple's suppliers might be able to catch up.

In any case, it seems certain that all of the models will be out well in time for Christmas.

The big launch event always takes place in September, and generally falls early on in the month – on a Tuesday or Wednesday, typically.

For 2022, we'd expect the event to take place on Tuesday, September 13 or Wednesday, September 14.

That would be followed by iPhone 14 pre-orders on Friday, September 16.

And we'd expect an actual iPhone 14 release date of Friday, September 23.

Sadly some models might ship later if rumours of the delay are true.

There are four rumoured models: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

That's a bit of a departure from previous years, with the old "Mini" model scrapped in favour of a bigger "Max" base model.

We're expecting a big bump to processing with a new A16 chip.

And the camera will likely see some major upgrades too.

Apple is also just days away from unveiling its new iOS 16 update, which will debut on the iPhone 14 when it launches.

Sadly, nothing is certain until Apple makes an official announcement.
