There’s no need to use any expensive rust-removers; you can do the trick with this 25p vegetable – and a bit of elbow grease. Here’s how to remove rust from kitchen trays and pans using a potato.

The versatile 25p vegetable can be used with washing-up liquid or baking soda to help remove rust from baking trays and pans.
You don’t need to use any fancy cleaning products or chemicals – just grab a potato from your vegetable drawer and use it to scrub away at rusty kitchen items.
The reason potatoes are such an effective rust remover is because the starchy vegetables contain a substance called oxalic acid.
Oxalic acid helps to break down the rust.
Here’s how to use a common potato to make your kitchen items look like new again.
How to remove rust from baking trays using a potato
Give the tray a wash first to lift any surface-level grease or grime.
Next, cut your potato in half and dip the cut end into either washing-up liquid or baking soda.
Use this end of your potato to start scrubbing away at the rusty areas of your baking tray.
When your potato starts wearing away, just cut a bit further down to replenish your potato sponge.
Then repeat the step of dipping the potato in washing-up liquid or baking soda, and get scrubbing.
Once you’ve removed the rust, just dry your baking tray as usual.
How to clean rust from an iron skillet
If you’ve got rust on an iron skillet, you’ll need to be more cautious with how you clean it off, as cleaning products can damage the iron.

Rather than using washing-up liquid or baking soda on a cast iron skillet, it’s recommended to use kosher salt.
Coat the rusted area of your cast iron skillet with kosher salt before cutting your potato in half and using the cut end to scrub away at the rust.
As before, if your potato starts falling apart, simply cut below the used part and keep going.
If your salt gets dirty, give the pan a rinse and add fresh salt.
Once the rust is removed, rinse out your pan and pat it dry with kitchen towel.
Your iron skillet will then need re-seasoning – where you add oil and bake the pan – in order to prevent future rust.
