Beyond Meat Partners With Pizza Hut on Plant-Based Sausage Pizza

Beyond Meat Inc. will provideYum! Brands Inc.’s Pizza Hut with plant-based Italian sausage for a new line of pizzas, the faux-meat maker’s latest conquest in the restaurant industry.

The offerings, called the Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza and Great Beyond Pizza, were co-created by the companies, which say the ingredients will have the same flavor and texture of Pizza Hut’s Italian pork sausage. The topping is made from a base of pea and rice proteins.

Consumers are increasingly gravitating to plant-based meat that mimics the taste and feel of the real thing, Pizza Hut Chief Brand Officer David Graves said in a phone interview. Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown, meanwhile, said the partnership could produce more products in the future.

“We’re going to keep looking at things and try to be a service to them as they explore additions,” Brown said.

On Monday, Beyond Meatreported earnings that disappointed Wall Street as restaurant sales eroded amid the global pandemic and consumer stockpiling of groceries eased, causing shares to plunge in late trading.

KFC, Taco Bell

Another Yum brand, KFC, has also worked with Beyond Meat in the past. The fried-chicken chain has sold plant-based nuggets in trials inCalifornia andGeorgia. Taco Bell, also owned by Yum,said earlier this year that it was working on creating faux meat dishes.

Beyond Meat is becoming increasingly common across the restaurant landscape. On Monday, the company said it collaborated withMcDonald’s Corp. on its new line of substitute meat patties.

While restaurant traffic has taken a hit from the Covid-19 pandemic, companies had reported beforehand that plant-based meat offerings have helped to drive traffic and bring in new customers.
